16-of-16) Asfordby ‘Super Pit’ coal mine with construction nearing completion and the distinctive Koepe winding towers standing prominently, Winter 1988/1989.
Coal, initially from driving roadways, was taken away by train using the connection to the Old Dalby test track, with the first long-wall coal face commencing production in July 1995. However, serious geological problems and the low market price for coal caused the mine to close in 1997, and these two Koepe winding towers were demolished using controlled explosions on 29th March 1998.
