Jalandhar, India, 25/12/1993

Photographs at Jalandhar, south-east of Amritsar.  The track is broad gauge, 5ft 6ins (1,676mm), and this area was known for its use of the WL class 4-6-2 “light Pacific” locomotives on the local passenger trains, however they were due to be retired imminently.

What a way to enjoy Christmas Day !

Broad gauge, diesel locomotive, class WDM2 Co-Co 17827 departs from Jalandhar, India, with a local passenger train, 25th December 1993.

5-of-9) Broad gauge, diesel locomotive, class WDM2 Co-Co 17827 (built DLW (Diesel Locomotive Works, Varansi), 1978-9) departs from Jalandhar, India, with a local passenger train.

This locomotive is one of the slightly sinister looking Americanised, cut-down, full-width, short hood version of the WDM2, nicknamed “Jumbos”, with strange “spiders web” protective grills over the front windows.  These were designed to give improved visibility for the drivers but any improvements were minimal and there were disadvantages of this arrangement so this version was only produced for a short period.  Compare with the standard, high, short hood version of the WDM2 below.

This locomotive, which is throwing out more smoke than many of the steam locomotives, is the normal version of the WDM2 with the standard high short hood.  Compare with the cut-down, full-width, short hood version of the WDM2 above.
